ILLINOIS CANNABIS LAW
Questions about Illinois Cannabis Law
Answers about Illinois Cannabis Law
How old do you have to be to buy cannabis in Illinois?
You must be 21 or older with a valid government-issued ID to purchase cannabis in Illinois. That’s the only requirement at HERBSOCIAL, and no Illinois residency is needed, so friends from across the Indiana line are welcome too. Bring a current, unexpired ID and you’re set.
How much can I purchase?
Your purchase limit depends on where you live.
- Illinois Residents (21+ with valid state ID)
- Flower: Up to 60 grams
- Concentrates: Up to 10 grams
- Edibles / Infused Products: Up to 1,000 mg of THC
- Out-of-State Visitors (21+ with valid ID)
- Flower: Up to 30 grams
- Concentrates: Up to 5 grams
- Edibles / Infused Products: Up to 500 mg of THC
These limits were updated under Illinois law effective June 12, 2026.
Can out-of-state visitors buy cannabis in Illinois?
Yes. Any adult 21 or older with a valid government-issued ID can shop at HERBSOCIAL, no matter what state they call home. Illinois doesn’t require residency to purchase recreational cannabis. Out-of-state visitors do have lower purchase limits, which we list above.
Can I drive to Illinois from Indiana to buy cannabis?
Yes, and plenty of our community makes the trip across the Indiana line to shop with us in Lawrenceville. Buying recreational cannabis in Illinois is legal for any adult 21 or older with a valid ID. Just know that once you buy, it needs to stay in Illinois, and we explain why below.
Can I take cannabis from Illinois back to Indiana?
No. Cannabis purchased in Illinois has to stay in Illinois. Federal law and Indiana law both prohibit carrying it across state lines, even between places where it may be legal on each side. We want every HERBSOCIAL visit to be a good one, so plan to enjoy what you buy in-state.
Where can I legally consume cannabis in Illinois?
You can consume cannabis on private property with the owner’s permission, like your own home. It’s illegal to consume in public spaces, in vehicles, or on federal land, and many hotels and rentals prohibit it too, so it’s always worth checking first. HERBSOCIAL is a retail space, so we don’t allow consumption on-site.
FIRST-TIME CUSTOMERS
Questions for First-Time Customers
Answers for First-Time Customers
I've never been to a dispensary. What should I expect?
Your first visit to HERBSOCIAL is simple and welcoming. We check your valid government-issued ID at the door, then you’re free to browse the menu and ask our budtenders anything. There’s no pressure and no judgment, just honest guidance to help you find what you’re looking for. Plenty of our community started as first-timers, so you’re in good company.
How do I choose my first cannabis product?
Choosing your first product starts with how you want to feel, whether that’s relaxed, uplifted, or somewhere in between. From there, our budtenders can guide you toward a format that fits, like a low-dose edible, a pre-roll, or a vape. There’s no wrong place to start, and going with a lower potency is always smart. Tell us what you’re after and we’ll help you find it.
What is a typical starting dose for edibles?
A common starting dose is 2.5 to 5 mg of THC, especially if you’re new to cannabis. Because edibles take time to kick in, take one low dose and wait at least two hours before deciding on more. Starting low keeps the experience comfortable and enjoyable. Our team can point you to beginner-friendly options with clear dosing.
How do budtenders help me pick products?
Our budtenders make your visit easy and enjoyable. They’ll ask about the experience you want, your comfort level, and any preferences, then recommend products that fit. Think of them as knowledgeable guides, not salespeople, because there’s never pressure to buy. Whether it’s your first visit or your hundredth, you’ll leave knowing more than when you walked in.
PRODUCTS & EFFECTS
Questions about Products & Effects
Answers about Products & Effects
What is the difference between indica, sativa, and hybrid?
Indica, sativa, and hybrid describe the general kind of experience a strain tends to offer. Indica is often linked to relaxed, body-focused effects that suit evenings, sativa leans uplifting and energizing for daytime, and hybrids blend the two. These are helpful starting points, not strict rules, and our budtenders can steer you toward what fits the experience you’re after.
What is the difference between Delta-8 and Delta-9 THC?
Delta-9 THC is the primary compound behind the classic effects of cannabis, and it’s what you’ll find in every product at HERBSOCIAL. It’s lab-tested, regulated, and sold through licensed dispensaries like ours.
Delta-8 is a different story. It’s a synthetic cannabinoid manufactured from hemp-derived CBD, and it’s often sold at gas stations and convenience stores without lab testing or oversight. While it’s marketed as a “milder” option, the conversion process can introduce harmful byproducts, and its legal status in Illinois remains unclear.
What does THCA flower mean?
THCA is the raw, non-intoxicating form of THC in fresh cannabis flower. When you heat it by smoking, vaping, or cooking, THCA converts into THC and produces the effects most people associate with cannabis. So THCA flower is simply flower in its natural state before heat activates it. Ask our budtenders how this plays into the products you’re considering.
How long do edibles take to kick in?
Edibles usually take 30 minutes to 2 hours to take effect, because your body digests them first. Since the onset is slower than smoking or vaping, we always suggest starting low and giving it time before having more. A good rule for first-timers is a small dose and a couple hours’ patience. Our team can help you find a comfortable starting point.
What is the difference between distillate and live resin?
Distillate and live resin are both concentrates, made differently for different experiences. Distillate is highly refined and potent with most of the plant’s natural flavor removed, so it’s clean and versatile. Live resin uses fresh-frozen cannabis to preserve the plant’s original terpenes, so it delivers richer flavor and aroma. If flavor matters to you, live resin is worth exploring, and our budtenders can show you both.
What is RSO and how is it used?
RSO, or Rick Simpson Oil, is a highly concentrated, full-spectrum cannabis extract, usually sold in a syringe. It’s very potent, so people typically use it in small amounts, either directly or added to food. Because of that strength, RSO suits more experienced consumers. If you’re curious whether it’s right for you, our team can talk you through it.
What are terpenes?
Terpenes are the natural compounds that give cannabis its aromas and flavors, from citrus and pine to earthy and sweet. Beyond scent, they shape the overall experience of a strain by working alongside cannabinoids like THC. Paying attention to terpenes is one of the best ways to find products you genuinely enjoy. Ask our budtenders about terpene profiles on your next visit.
